Zebra Mussels
Zebra Mussels
After the introduction of the non-native Zebra Mussel to the Great Lakes in 1988, this invasive species has continued to rapidly reproduce and spread throughout the region, destroying lakes and harming the $4.7 million fishing industry. Zebra Mussels filter the water and prey on many of the native species already in the water, leaving behind a lake with perfect water clarity and little to no wild life.
Many questions are aroused by this shocking information- what exactly is a zebra mussel? How can one identify a zebra mussel? Are there any ways to prevent the spread of the zebra mussel? What is this species doing to our ecosystem? Hopefully, we will be able to prevent the spread of the zebra mussel and rid the land of 10,000 lakes of this harmful species.
