Trend Watching

Summer is almost here and that means it's time to open up your windows, and your closets, to let some fresh air in. The runway this spring was full of bold prints, victorian femininity, and new takes on old classics. This summer get ready to pull out some old favorites and add to your wardrobe with new soon-to-be favorites.

Still in style are the flowing prairie skirts, Bermuda shorts, and gaucho crop pants we all came to love last year. if you haven't already, run out and pick up these essential items for your summer wardrobe. Not only are they easy to wear everyday, they can also be dressed up for going from day into night. Now that we've covered the basics, let's look at what's in store for trends this summer. The ethnic prints that were popular last summer have been transformed into bold prints this year.

The styles from the runway may be a bit much; here is a tamed down version available at Chico's.

Another trend prevalent on the runway was lace, and lots of it. The Victorian vintage look floated down the runway in many collections like this dress from Kenzo. This simple white strapless dress from White House Black Market captures the same feel without the high price tag. The shirtdress is once again back in style. This spring designers took this old classic to new places. Stella McCartney's variation of the shirt dress is purely feminine, while others gave the look a more masculine feel. For those trying to capture this look check out Banana Republic's sheer cotton roll-up shirt. Or get really creative and borrow a man's dress shirt, and cinch it at the waist with a wide belt.

For the working woman, the pantsuit is back, but don't go to the mall expecting to see the 80's power suit back in play. The new pantsuit is slim and sleek. This suit from Bill Blass is a perfect example of the new look. This suit from Chico's emulates the same sophistication that is the new pantsuit.
